N-(trifluoromethylthio)saccharin, also known as Trifluoromethylthiosaccharin (TFMS), is an organosulfur compound that has been widely used in scientific research due to its unique properties. It is a versatile reagent that can be used in a variety of synthetic and analytical applications. TFMS is an important tool for scientists who are interested in exploring the biochemical and physiological effects of compounds.
N-(Trifluoromethylthio)saccharin has been utilized as an electrophilic trifluoromethylthiolating reagent, particularly for heteroarenes, benzenes with electron-donating groups, and electron-rich olefins. Catalysts like Iron(III) and gold(III) have shown complementary activity with different substrates in this context (Wang, Qi, Xie, & Li, 2015).
This compound is also notable for its role in developing new trifluoromethylthiolating agents. N-trifluoromethylthiosaccharin, an electrophilic trifluoromethylthiolating reagent, can be synthesized from saccharin within 30 minutes. It's powerful in trifluoromethylthiolating various nucleophiles, including alcohols, amines, thiols, and alkynes, under mild conditions (Xu, Ma, & Shen, 2014).
In organocatalysis, it serves as a trifluoromethylthiolating agent for silylenol ethers, activated by Lewis base catalysts. This process has been explored in both traditional batch and continuous flow methodologies, with flow systems showing higher productivity despite lower yields (Abubakar, Benaglia, Rossi, & Annunziata, 2017) .
Saccharin and its derivatives, including N-(trifluoromethylthio)saccharin, have been employed as catalysts in various organic transformations. These substances are known for being mild, cheap, and environmentally benign (Banerjee, Bhardwaj, Kaur, Kaur, & Singh, 2020).
