CAS:306-94-5 | Perfluorodecalin ,Description

Perfluorodecalin (PFD) is a fluorinated liquid hydrocarbon compound that has a wide range of uses in scientific research, medical applications, and industrial processes. It is a colorless, odorless liquid with a low vapor pressure, making it ideal for use in a variety of applications. PFD is a highly inert compound, meaning it is resistant to most chemical reactions, making it an ideal choice for laboratory experiments. PFD is also non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive, making it safe to handle and use in laboratory experiments.

Scientific Research Applications

Environmental Impact and Atmospheric DetectionPerfluorodecalin (PFD) has been proposed as a carrier of vaccines, leading to potential larger emissions into the atmosphere. Despite its small atmospheric concentration, it has a significant global warming potential (GWP), making it a potent greenhouse gas. The detection and measurement of PFD in the atmosphere are crucial for assessing its environmental impact and the need for careful assessment of its future usage. Laboratory measurements and theoretical calculations have been conducted to determine the integrated absorption cross-section and the radiative efficiency of PFD, revealing its potency as a greenhouse gas (Shine et al., 2005).

Bone RegenerationPFD is a chemically and biologically inert biomaterial with high solute capacity for gases like oxygen. It has demonstrated significant potential in enhancing bone regeneration. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that PFD can prolong the survival of bone marrow cells under anaerobic conditions and improve the capacity of 3D-printed scaffolds incorporated with bone marrow to regenerate bone. Additionally, PFD's properties can improve the radiopacity of bone regeneration biomaterials, essential for surgical implantation visualization, and its extreme hydrophobicity allows the fabrication of cohesive self-setting injectable biomaterials for bone regeneration (Tamimi et al., 2013).

Environmental Fate and HazardsPerfluorodecalin's environmental fate properties, such as octanol-water partition coefficient, water solubility, and Henry’s law constant, have been estimated to assess its environmental implications. It tends to be hydrophobic and partitioned into organic matter, leading to concerns about its contribution to global warming and the need for emission mitigation strategies. The possibility of perfluorodecalin forming trifluoroacetic acid in the atmosphere through ionized photolysis has also been addressed, suggesting the need for further research on its environmental impact (Tsai, 2011).

Medical ImagingPFD has been demonstrated in a human eye with fluorine-19 magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, showcasing its potential in medical diagnostic techniques. Despite obstructions in the posterior eye segment, the presence and intraocular distribution of PFD were effectively revealed, indicating its usefulness in clinical settings (Gewiese et al., 1992).
