OFHD has been used in scientific research for its unique properties, such as its ability to act as a surfactant and its low solubility in water. It has also been used in a variety of applications, including as an additive in various organic reactions, as a solvent for chemical reactions, and as a surfactant in the synthesis of polymers. 
 

Scientific Research Applications

 

Optical Amplifiers

2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-Octafluoro-1,6-hexanediol has been used in the fabrication of erbium-doped fluoropolymer patterns for planar optical amplifiers. These films demonstrate excellent transmission properties, high thermal decomposition temperature, and support a high concentration of erbium, making them suitable for optical amplifier applications (Kim, Choi, & Han, 2011).

Polymer Synthesis

This compound has been involved in synthesizing a variety of polymers. For instance, it's a component in the enzymatic synthesis of silicone fluorinated aliphatic polyesteramides, a new class of materials with potential low surface energy applications (Palsule & Poojari, 2010). It is also used in synthesizing novel fluorinated aliphatic polyurethanes, which have shown improved blood compatibility and potential in medical applications (Chen & Kuo, 2000).

Molecular Research

In molecular research, 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-Octafluoro-1,6-hexanediol has been observed to rapidly immobilize and condense chromatin in living human cells. This finding is significant for understanding cellular processes and drug development (Itoh et al., 2021).

Chemical Synthesis

This chemical is also utilized in the synthesis of other compounds. For example, it has been used in the mercury-photosensitized dehydrodimerization of fluorinated alcohols (Voss, Lichnock, & Bargon, 1997) and in the conversion of 1,2,6-hexanetriol to 1,6-hexanediol, an important polymer precursor (Buntara et al., 2012).
