1H,1H,5H-Octafluoropentyl methacrylate (OFPMA) is an organofluorine compound that is commonly used as a monomer in the synthesis of polymers. It is a highly fluorinated alkyl methacrylate which has a wide range of applications in various scientific fields, particularly in the areas of surface modification, chemical and biological sensing, and drug delivery. OFPMA is also used in the production of polymeric materials with improved surface properties, such as hydrophobicity, chemical resistance, and durability. 
 

Scientific Research Applications

 

  • Polymer Synthesis: "1H,1H,5H-Octafluoropentyl methacrylate" is used in the synthesis of semifluorinated homopolymers via Single Electron Transfer-Living Radical Polymerization (SET-LRP), demonstrating excellent control over molecular weight and distribution (Samanta et al., 2014).
  • Thermal Degradation Studies: It has been utilized to study the thermal degradation of fluoropolymer thin films, which is a two-stage, thermal bond-breaking process (Tompkins, 1973).
  • Biomedical Applications: The compound is used for surface modification of polyether ether ketone to impart antibiofilm properties, making it suitable for bio-compatible devices (Amdjadi et al., 2017).
  • Material Science: Used in the formation of barrier coatings to prevent liquid spreading, specifically in controlling silicone oil spreading (Tompkins & Sharma, 1980).
  • Drug Release and Hydrogels: Its application in thermosensitive hydrogels shows effects on equilibrium swelling ratio, mechanical properties, and drug release behavior (Lee & Liu, 2006) .
  • Dental Applications: In orthodontics, it's used in adhesives containing antibiofilm agent for acceptable bond strength (Dastjerdi et al., 2018).
