Scientific Research Applications

  • Detection of Hydroxy Fatty Acids in Biological Samples: This study highlights the use of methyl heptafluorobutyrate derivatives for the analysis of hydroxy fatty acids in biological samples via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The advantages of using heptafluorobutyrates in trace analysis, particularly their high sensitivity and distinctive mass fragmentation patterns in both positive and negative chemical ionization modes, are noted (Stan & Scheutwinkel-Reich, 1980).
  • Ultra-Sensitive Measurement of Steroids: In this research, the application of heptafluorobutyrates as derivatives for the ultra-sensitive measurement of hydroxyl-containing steroids is described. The study demonstrates the capability of detecting nanogram amounts of steroids following gas chromatography (Clark & Wotiz, 1963).
  • Quantitative Assay of Bile Acids: The study presents a method for quantitatively analyzing individual bile acids in biological samples, where heptafluorobutyric acid anhydride is used as the derivatizing agent. This method simplifies the process of preparing heptafluorobutyrate derivatives of bile acids, which are characterized for gas-liquid chromatography (Musial & Williams, 1979).
  • Analysis of Prostaglandins: This research focuses on the preparation of triheptafluorobutyrate methyl ester derivatives from prostaglandins for analysis via electron-capture gas chromatography. It explores the thermal decomposition of these derivatives and their potential as stable, sensitive compounds for prostaglandin analysis (Levitt, Josimovich, & Broskin, 1972).
  • Chromatographic Analysis of Monosaccharides: This study develops a method for the quantitative determination of monosaccharides in glycoproteins and glycolipids by forming heptafluorobutyrate derivatives of O-methyl-glycosides. The derivatives are characterized for use in electron impact ionization mass spectrometry, offering an improvement over traditional methods (Zanetta, Timmerman, & Leroy, 1999).
