Tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate (Tris-TFP) is a colorless, odorless, and non-flammable liquid which is widely used in laboratories and industrial applications. It is a highly effective solvent for organic compounds, and is also used as a buffer in biochemical and physiological experiments. It is also used as a lubricant in many industrial processes. Tris-TFP is a tri-functional phosphate ester, and is composed of three trifluoroethyl groups attached to a phosphorus atom.
Tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate has been studied for its application in lithium-ion batteries. A notable example includes its use in a safe electrolyte mixture containing lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate and propylene carbonate, enhancing the cycle performances and rate performance of lithium-ion batteries (Gu et al., 2020). It imparts non-flammable characteristics and improves wettability to separators and electrodes.
This compound has been used as a reagent in the alkylation of aromatic amines, particularly for introducing a trifluoroethyl group into these compounds. It is effective except in amines with specific substituents like N-alkyl, hydroxyl, or alkoxyl (Bissell, 1977) .
In the synthesis of mixed unsymmetrical phosphate triesters, tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate is utilized. This method, involving a three-step substitution, facilitates the preparation of these phosphates from various alcohols (Tsubaki et al., 2019).
This compound is synthesized as a flame-retarding solvent and studied for its effects on the physicochemical properties of electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries. Its addition results in reduced flammability and vapor pressure but lowers conductivity by increasing viscosity and reducing the dielectric constant of solvents (Ding et al., 2002).
Tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate has been investigated for enhancing both electronic and ionic conductivities of cathode electrolyte interphases in high-voltage lithium-ion batteries. It demonstrates a synergistic effect on the optimization of conductivity in these batteries (Liang et al., 2019).
The process of preparing high-purity tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate has been optimized for use in lithium-ion batteries. The refined product meets the requirements for battery applications and demonstrates effective flame-retarding properties (Xiao-lei, 2010).
